We keep seeing these along the roads in Oregon, and we still have no idea what they are. They’re usually placed at the end of a driveway, with the lower glass section facing toward the road. They look like they’re around 15 feet tall. Every time my wife sees one, she gets frustrated trying to figure it out. At first, we wondered: Is it some kind of lookout tower? A giant birdhouse? In many rural areas, driveways connect to narrow roads where trees, hills, or curves can block a driver’s view. Limited visibility can make it difficult to know when it is safe to enter traffic. While some homeowners install roadside mirrors to improve visibility, this homeowner came up with a unique alternative.

The tower works using the same basic optical principles found in a traditional periscope. A mirror mounted near the top captures the view of the roadway, and a second mirror reflects that image downward to a viewing window at eye level. This allows drivers to see approaching vehicles without pulling their car into the road.

One of the most impressive aspects of the design is its simplicity. It operates without electricity, cameras, screens, or moving parts. Instead, it relies entirely on carefully positioned mirrors and the natural reflection of light, making it both reliable and easy to maintain.
