9 Signs of Diabetes That Appear at Night

Diabetes does not always announce itself loudly. Many people imagine that warning signs only happen during the day, but some clues can become more noticeable at night, when the body is resting and distractions are gone. Waking up often, feeling thirsty, sweating during sleep, leg discomfort, or feeling unusually tired in the morning may all be signs that blood sugar is not well balanced.

This does not mean every nighttime symptom is diabetes. Poor sleep, stress, caffeine, urinary tract infections, medications, menopause, dehydration, sleep apnea, and many other conditions can cause similar symptoms. But if these signs happen repeatedly, especially together, they should not be ignored.

Here are nine nighttime signs that may be linked to diabetes or blood sugar imbalance.

1. Frequent Urination at Night

One of the most common signs of diabetes is frequent urination. When blood sugar is too high, the kidneys work harder to remove extra glucose from the blood. This can lead to more urine production and more trips to the bathroom.

At night, this may show up as waking once, twice, or several times to urinate. It can disturb deep sleep and leave you tired the next morning.

The CDC lists frequent urination as a common symptom of diabetes, along with increased thirst and hunger, fatigue, blurry vision, and frequent infections.

2. Intense Thirst After Waking
