If you’ve ever sat next to an airplane window, you may have noticed something unusual: a tiny hole near the bottom of the window.

At first, it might look like a manufacturing mistake or a small defect. But it’s actually there by design, and it plays an important role in how airplane windows handle pressure.

So, why does an airplane window have a tiny hole?

✈️ Airplane Windows Are Made of Multiple Layers

One thing many passengers don’t realize is that an airplane window isn’t simply one thick piece of glass.

Passenger aircraft windows typically use multiple transparent layers. The outer layers are designed to withstand the conditions outside the aircraft, while the inner pane helps protect the cabin.

When the aircraft climbs to cruising altitude, the air pressure outside becomes much lower than the pressure maintained inside the cabin.

That creates a significant pressure difference across the window.

🔎 So What Does the Tiny Hole Do?

The small hole is commonly called a breather hole or bleed hole.

Its main purpose is to help manage the pressure between the different layers of the window.

During flight, cabin pressure is much higher than the pressure outside the aircraft. The tiny opening allows pressure to equalize in the space between the panes in a controlled way.

This means that the outer pane carries most of the pressure load, rather than the inner pane having to handle the entire pressure difference.

That’s an important part of the window’s design.
